For the first time in history, the Bihar municipal elections introduced an innovative twist that had never been seen before: e-voting replaced traditional paper ballots.

Digital Voting with the SECVHR App
On June 28, during the municipal corporation elections and bypolls, the Bihar State Election Commission unveiled a new experiment—electronic voting through the SECVHR mobile app. Voters no longer had to visit physical polling booths. Instead, voting became as simple as opening an app on their mobile phones and casting their votes from anywhere.
Record Participation Thanks to Convenience
Due to this unprecedented convenience, 70% of those who registered for mobile voting successfully cast their ballot through the app. This highlights a significant increase in voter participation, attributed directly to the ease of digital voting.
Security and Privacy: Ongoing Concerns
While the process ran smoothly, questions remain about the security and privacy of mobile-based voting. Because of these concerns, the Election Commission has implemented e-voting as a pilot project, carefully evaluating its impact and reliability before making it permanent.

What’s Next? Expansion on the Horizon
Given the experiment’s success, there is now speculation that this technology could be rolled out for the bigger state elections scheduled in October and November. The future of voting in Bihar may soon be shaped by these digital innovations.
