India’s Quantum Computing Revolution

Critical Security Alert Sparks National Action

In 2023, India’s leading scientists presented a crucial report to the government warning that by 2030, supercomputers could break current encryption methods. This poses serious risks to internet servers, public data, digital payment systems, and national infrastructure, making quantum-resistant cybersecurity an urgent national priority.

Government Launches ₹6000 Crore National Quantum Mission

Responding to these security threats, the Indian government launched the National Quantum Mission in April 2023 with a budget of ₹6,003.65 crore for 2023-2031. This initiative aims to develop quantum computing infrastructure, secure communication systems, and position India among the top six quantum-capable nations globally.

Eight Companies Selected for Quantum Development

Under the National Quantum Mission, eight startups have been selected to drive innovation across quantum technologies. Each company receives up to ₹30 crore in funding to advance their specialized quantum solutions. The selected companies include QpiAI and Quanfluence, along with QNu Labs, Dimira Technologies, Prenishq, QuPrayog, Quanastra, and Pristine Diamonds.

QpiAI’s Journey from Garage to Quantum Computer

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Nagendra Nagaraja in Bangalore , QpiAI started as a bootstrap startup and has grown into India’s leading quantum computing company. In April 2024, they launched QpiAI-Indus, India’s first full-stack 25-qubit superconducting quantum computer. The company has filed 11 patents, generates ₹1 million annually, and recently raised $32 million in Series A funding co-led by the government’s National Quantum Mission.

Quanfluence Develops Indigenous Photonic Quantum Computer

Quanfluence, founded in 2021 by a team of six scientists including Sujoy Chakravarty , has developed India’s first photonic quantum computer using entirely indigenous components. Their optical Ising machine uses light waves as computational units and can process complex optimization problems 100 times faster than traditional methods. The company recently secured $2 million in seed funding to advance their quantum computing research.

Complex Technology for Future Security

While quantum computing involves highly complex technology, India recognizes the critical importance of developing these capabilities to protect its digital infrastructure. The National Quantum Mission targets building quantum computers with 50-1000 qubits, secure satellite communication networks spanning 2000 kilometers, and quantum-safe encryption systems.

National Mission Timeline and Goals

The mission aims to achieve significant milestones by 2030, including intermediate-scale quantum computers, quantum communication networks, precision atomic clocks, and advanced quantum materials. India joins the United States, China, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom as nations with dedicated quantum computing programs.

This quantum computing initiative represents India’s commitment to technological self-reliance and securing its digital future against emerging cybersecurity threats in the quantum era.
